Grigorovich was a forceful representative of Russia’s traditional adherence to iron dictators, whether in politics or culture – fearless, devious and impermeable to challenges either to his rights as leader or the artistic merit of his choreography.
Born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) into a family of ballet dancers, Grigorovich’s career as a performer and choreographer spanned eight decades.
For much of it, he was the artistic powerhouse behind the Bolshoi, which he was said to have run with an iron fist.
